Prelude in B minor bwv 544.i J.S. Bach
Prière, op. 20 César Franck
Fugue in B minor bwv 544.ii J.S. Bach
Franck’s ‘Prière’ is one of the few organ pieces I remember being familiar with before I took up the instrument, thanks to a Pipedreams broadcast I must have heard when I was in high school. I finally learned it for a Choral Evensong that happened to fall on the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks but have not had the opportunity to play it since; I am indebted to Paul Keith for the kind invitation to take part in this Lenten recital series, for which it seems an appropriate selection. Bach’s tragic-affekt B Minor Prelude and Fugue – the prelude in particular being one of his great mature organ works – provide a frame for the Franck.
